New Data Reveals Welcome Corps Sponsors in Every State + D.C.
More than 65,000 people across the United States have formed sponsor groups in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., to welcome refugees through the Welcome Corps. The Welcome Corps is a U.S. Department of State program that empowers everyday Americans to directly support refugee resettlement.
This overwhelming response reflects a profound American commitment to welcome those seeking refuge.
In December 2023, the Welcome Corps expanded to allow sponsors to facilitate the resettlement of refugees they have personal connections with, including family members, friends, classmates, and coworkers. Through this expansion, sponsors have now submitted more than 13,000 applications to refer refugees they know directly to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
The latest data, released by Community Sponsorship Hub and examined by Niskanen Center, highlights the transformative shift in the way we approach refugee resettlement by placing the power of sponsorship directly into the hands of Americans and their local communities.
“In the face of global challenges, the Welcome Corps reinforces America’s longstanding tradition as a nation of refugees and provides a beacon of hope for persecuted people around the world,” said Annie Nolte-Henning is the executive director of the Community Sponsorship Hub. “The Welcome Corps also provides an opportunity for veterans to sponsor allies and partners they served alongside overseas, for faith communities to welcome those fleeing persecution, and for sponsors of all backgrounds to make a difference in their communities.”
